As soon as temperature rises, the first few things that hit our mind is cold water, good summer fruits, a lot of tanning and air conditioners. The way temperature is rising with every passing year; air conditioners have become kind of our basic requirement.

But, what exactly Air Conditioner does?

An air conditioner is a system or machine which treats the air in a defined manner of an enclosed area, using a cooling cycle via which the warm air is replaced with cooler air. It not only controls the temperature of an enclosed space but also controls the humidity, purity, and motion of the air of the area irrespective of the temperature outside the enclosed air. It removes moisture and heat from the defined area and makes the interior comfortable for the user.

How does Air Conditioner work?

An air conditioner is designed in a way that it can change the temperature of an enclosed area as per your requirements and can suck out the humidity and moisture of the air and improve the general quality of the air. This is done through ductwork inside your home, which draws the heat out of your house and replaces it with cooler air using the cooling cycle present in the air conditioners.

Different Types of Air Conditioners:

There are many types of air conditioners available in the market to meet the requirements of the consumers. And those are explained briefly below:

Window Air Conditioner:

Window air conditioners are self-contained units that are placed in a window and can also be installed by creating a hole in the road facing a wall of the room. These are more suitable for apartments and single-level homes and are available in different sizes that can fit in a variety of window types. These air conditioners are affordable as compared to the rest of the classes, but their air outcome is limited.

Air Source Heat Pump:

The air source heat pump is a low maintenance air conditioner for homes with ductwork. These are energy-efficient cooling sources. These air conditioners are more preferred for the mild climate and not for extreme summers or winters. The cost of installation of heat pumps is higher as compared to any other types, but running and maintenance charges are low.

Central Air Conditioners:

Central air conditioners are the best way to cool your entire home all at once and that too very quietly and because of this specification, central air conditioners are considered to be the most expensive one among all the other types. They consist of two units: the evaporation unit that is placed next to the furnace and the condensing unit that is placed outside the house and both the units are via a refrigerant tube.

Split Air Conditioner (Ductless AC):

Ductless air conditioners are also most commonly known as split air conditioners that are most frequently used by the owners who don’t have any ductwork in their homes and are looking for a more permanent solution for cooling situations. Ductless air conditioners consist of one terminal placed on the exterior wall of the home and two small air conditioning units placed on the interior wall of the house, which is connected by a refrigerant tube.

Portable Air Conditioners:

As the name suggests, the portable air conditioner is a single self-contained unit that can be placed in the room. They use hose vent to let go of the hot air through the window. Portable air conditioners can be noisy, but it is a good solution for temporary cooling situations.

The most commonly used air conditioners are either window or ductless/split air conditioners. And a purchaser is mostly in this dilemma about which air conditioner he/she should purchase.

Difference between Window and Split Air Conditioner:

  • EER Ratios: EER ratio or energy efficiency ratio represents the amount of cooling an air conditioner can provide as compared to the per watt electricity it consumes. In case an AC is rated with 5 stars, it means that the energy efficiency of the air conditioner is higher and provides more cooling per watt electricity it consumes. So Split/Ductless AC has more models with BEE 5 as compared to the Window AC.
  • No of Units: Window AC is a single unit air conditioner installed in the window or at the road facing the wall of the room, whereas the Split AC has 2 units installed both indoors and outdoors.
  • Noisy in Operation: Split ACs are more silent in operation, whereas Window ACs are noisy in this regard.
  • Look of the AC: Split ACs look more stylish and sophisticated as compared to window air conditioners. Split ACs also require relatively more space than Window AC.
  • Installations: Ductless ACs are more complex to install as compared to the Window AC.
  • Economically Feasible: Window ACs are cheaper as compared to the split/ductless AC.
  • Serviceability: Window ACs are easy for service as they are single-unit ACs, whereas Split ACs are difficult to service as compare to Window ACs because they consist of two units.
  • Maximum Capacity: Maximum capacity is restricted to 2.0 ton in Window ACs, whereas the capacity is not limited to 2.0 ton in case of Split AC.
